3 Different Types of Dental Implant Restoration

Dentist Blog

Dental implants are prosthetic replacements for natural teeth surgically placed in the jawbone when you have missing teeth. Implants can support dental crowns, bridges, or dentures. Read on for three types of dental implant restorations:

1. Single Tooth Dental Implant

A single tooth dental implant restoration is a treatment to replace a missing tooth. It is an alternative to a bridge. A single tooth dental implant consists of three parts:

  • A titanium screw fitted into the jawbone.

  • An abutment, which fits on top of the implant and sticks out above the gum line.

  • A replacement tooth (a crown) that fits onto the abutment.

The implant and the abutment are usually fitted simultaneously, but you may have to wait for several months for your new tooth (crown) to be made and fitted.

2. Implant-Supported Denture or Overdenture

A removable implant-supported denture is also called an overdenture. This is because the denture gets placed on top of the implants and can be removed. The advantage of this option is that it stabilizes the denture.

A bar or ball attachment can support the denture. With ball attachments, tooth-colored balls are attached to studs in the implants, which help hold the denture in place. In addition, the ball and socket design allow for movement of the denture when you talk or chew food.

Bar attachments consist of a metal bar attached to several implants. The dentures have metal clips that lock into these bars to keep them in place. In some cases, a combination of both is essential for extra stability.

3. Implant Hybrid Prosthesis

An implant hybrid prosthesis is a fixed prosthesis supported by implants and abutments. This type of prosthesis is perfect if you want an implant solution but have a low bone volume. This is also suitable if you have other contraindications to placing a fixed prosthesis over the dental implants.

The implants are placed in the jawbone. Then, they get time to heal and integrate with the bone. Once healed, the abutments get secured to the top of each implant. The abutments are like small posts that create a secure connection between the implant and the prosthetic teeth.

A custom-made denture is then created using acrylic or porcelain veneers and rests on these abutments. This creates a stable platform for you to chew and speak. The denture gets held firmly in place with natural suction. You can have the denture removed periodically for cleaning.

Conclusion

If you have lost teeth, dental implants may be an option. Your dental implants restoration services will suggest the best type of dental implant restoration to suit your needs.
