Keeping Your Kid's Teeth Healthy: What You Can Do To Help

Dentist Blog

Setting your children up for a healthy smile begins with you when they are at a very young age. You are the one that instills the importance of good oral health into your child and it's important that you do your part in this to ensure they have a bright, healthy smile for their entire lives. To help achieve this, there are a number of things you can do. Read on for some information to help keep your child's teeth healthy.

Brush Your Child's Teeth For Them

When your child is young and cannot hold a toothbrush just yet or cannot maneuver the toothbrush on their own, you should be brushing your child's teeth for them in order to ensure their teeth are getting as clean as possible and their gums, as well as their back teeth, are also getting clean. You should be teaching your child how to brush their teeth as you are simultaneously brushing your child's teeth for them.

Brush With Your Child

Having your child see you brush your own teeth can not only help them see how it's done, but it can also show them the importance of brushing their teeth if they see you doing it as well. Brush with your child and make it a nightly routine you both do together, or something you both do in the morning.

Take Your Child To The Dentist

Be sure to take your child to a children's dentist for routine checkups and for cleanings. Regular checkups can help instill the importance of going to the dentist and good oral health in your child. You should be taking your child to the dentist at the first emergence of their teeth and take them every six months for cleanings, checkups, and x-rays as needed. This can also help to catch oral health concerns ahead of time and have them treated as needed. Issues such as cavities, caries, and gum disease can all be caught ahead of time and treated.

Taking care of your child's teeth is much more than just giving them a toothbrush and toothpaste. You have to do your part in teaching your child about the importance of good oral hygiene and health so they take these things into their futures with them and take care of their own teeth as they age. Talk to your child's dentist about other things you can be doing to take care of your child's teeth and to keep their teeth healthy.
