Causes And Treatments For Overgrown Gums

Dentist Blog

Gum overgrowth is also known as gingival hyperplasia. This term refers to the overgrowth of gum tissue that can extend over your teeth and even in between your teeth. In addition, those who have gum overgrowth may notice that their gums bleed easily when brushing and flossing and when getting their teeth cleaned or probed with dental instruments during routine examinations. Here are some causes of gum overgrowth and how your dentist can treat it.

Causes Of Gum Overgrowth

Gingival hyperplasia can be caused by poor oral hygiene, hormonal problems, and blood disorders. Furthermore, people who take certain anticonvulsant medications to control their seizures may also develop gum overgrowth.

While a number of prescription medications can raise the risk for gingival hyperplasia, phenytoin, a common anti-seizure medication, may be most likely to cause it. Other medications that may lead to hyperplastic gum tissue include calcium channel blockers, which are drugs used in the management of certain cardiovascular conditions and high blood pressure. Discuss your medication use with your dentist at your next appointment so that he or she can assess their side effects to determine if any of them are causing your gum overgrowth.

Treatments For Gum Overgrowth

One of the most important treatments for gum overgrowth is maintaining good dental hygiene, seeing your dentist on a regular basis, and getting professional cleanings as recommended by your dental professional. When your gums grow into the spaces in between your teeth, you may be unable to effectively brush and floss your teeth, and consequently, plaque and bacteria may lead to cavities and periodontal disease.

Your dental professional may also consult with your primary care physician about your general state of health and your medications. Once your dental professional talks over your gum disorder with your primary care doctor, the physician may decide to lower the dosage of the offending medication or to prescribe another one in its place.

It is important to note that even if you stop taking the medication causing your gum overgrowth, you may not notice an improvement in your gum tissue for a month or more. If your gums are severely overgrown, your dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon who may recommend a gingivectomy, which refers to the surgical removal of overgrown gum tissue.

If you have gum overgrowth, see both your primary care physician and dental professional to determine the cause and to develop an effective treatment plan. Once your gum tissue reverts back to normal, you may be less likely to develop gum infections and periodontal disease.
